Free Pool Water Testing in Alpharetta: What We Test and Why It Matters
Stop guessing at chemicals. Here is what a computerized water test tells you and how to bring us a good sample.

Pool Supply Atlanta offers free computerized pool water testing at our Alpharetta store at 2900 Holcomb Bridge Rd. Bring a sample of your pool water and we will test it, explain the results and tell you exactly what your pool needs, and what it does not. No appointment needed during store hours.
Why test your water professionally?
Home test strips and kits are great for quick checks between visits, but they can be hard to read and easy to get wrong. A computerized test gives you clear, precise numbers across the readings that matter most, so you add the right products in the right amounts. That saves you money on chemicals you do not need and protects your pool surface and equipment from water that is out of balance.
What a water test checks
A computerized test looks at the key readings that keep your water safe, clear and gentle on your pool:
- •Free chlorine: the active sanitizer that kills bacteria and algae.
- •pH: how acidic or basic your water is. It affects comfort, chlorine strength and your pool surface.
- •Total alkalinity: helps keep pH stable so it does not swing up and down.
- •Calcium hardness: too low and water can etch plaster; too high and it can leave scale.
- •Cyanuric acid (stabilizer): protects chlorine from the sun, but too much makes chlorine less effective.
Ask us in store about any additional readings for your pool type, such as salt levels for saltwater pools.
General target ranges
These are common guidelines for residential pools. Your ideal numbers can vary with your pool surface, sanitizer type and equipment, which is why we explain your results in person.
| Reading | General target range |
|---|---|
| Free chlorine | 1 to 3 ppm |
| pH | 7.4 to 7.6 |
| Total alkalinity | 80 to 120 ppm |
| Calcium hardness | 200 to 400 ppm |
| Cyanuric acid (stabilizer) | 30 to 50 ppm |
Bring your sample to our Alpharetta store at 2900 Holcomb Bridge Rd. Open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 4pm. Testing is free, and we will never push products you do not need.
How to take a good water sample
A good sample means accurate results. Follow these steps:
- Use a clean, sealable bottle that has been rinsed well with no soap residue.
- Take the sample from the deep end, away from return jets, skimmers and chemical feeders.
- Turn the bottle upside down and push it about elbow deep before turning it upright to fill. Surface water does not represent the whole pool.
- Cap it tightly underwater or immediately after filling.
- Do not add chemicals for several hours before taking your sample.
- Bring it in as soon as you can and keep it out of direct sun and heat on the way.
How often should you get your water tested?
During swim season, a professional test every couple of weeks plus quick home checks in between keeps things on track. In winter, chlorine demand drops, but testing every few weeks still helps you catch problems before spring. Always test after heavy rain, a party, a green or cloudy spell, or any time something just looks off.
