Winterizing a Pool in Georgia: Close It or Keep It Running?

In North Atlanta, you have two good options for winter: keep your pool open with the pump running, or close it with a full winterization. Many local owners keep their pools running because our winters are mild, but either approach works if it is done properly. The biggest risk is a hard freeze damaging pipes and equipment, so freeze protection matters either way.

Why winterizing works differently in Georgia

Up north, pools freeze solid for months, so closing is the only option. In Alpharetta, Roswell and the rest of North Atlanta, winters are mostly mild with occasional hard freezes. That means you get a real choice, and the right one depends on your equipment, your schedule and how much winter maintenance you want to do.

Option 1 vs option 2 at a glance

How to keep your pool running through winter

    • •Run the pump fewer hours on mild days, but keep water moving whenever temperatures approach freezing. Moving water is far less likely to freeze in pipes and equipment.
    • •If your system has freeze protection, check that it is turned on and working before the first cold night.
    • •Keep skimmer and pump baskets clear of leaves so water flows freely.
    • •Test your water every week or two. Chlorine demand drops in cold water, but it never goes to zero.
    • •Brush the walls and floor occasionally to stop algae getting a foothold on warm winter days.

Not sure which option suits your pool? Bring a water sample and your questions to our Alpharetta store at 2900 Holcomb Bridge Rd. We will run a free computerized water test and give you an honest recommendation.

    How a full winterization works

    A proper closing usually includes:

    1. Balancing the water and adding a winter treatment so it stays clean under the cover.
    2. Cleaning the pool thoroughly so debris does not sit all winter.
    3. Lowering the water level below the skimmer opening.
    4. Clearing water out of the plumbing lines and protecting them from freezing.
    5. Draining and shutting down the pump, filter and heater so no water is left to freeze inside them.
    6. Fitting a secure winter cover.

Skipping a step, especially clearing the lines, is how pipes and equipment crack during a hard freeze.

Freeze protection: the one thing you cannot skip

Georgia does not freeze often, but a single hard freeze can crack pipes, pump housings and filters. Whichever option you choose, have a plan before the first cold snap: either water is moving through the system, or water has been fully cleared out of it. Exposed above-ground pipes at the equipment pad are the most vulnerable.

Keeping your water clean until spring

Winter is when small problems quietly grow. Leaves sink and stain the floor, chlorine slowly drops and a few warm days can trigger algae. A quick check every couple of weeks, plus a water test now and then, means you open in spring to clear water instead of a green swamp.
